If you’re looking for grooves that push boundaries while still sticking in your head, these three tracks deliver in very different ways. Mani Saint’s “Jolly” is a wild ride of Electro-Afrobeat and Amapiano with Creole and English vocals that demand you move. Sherwyn’s “Starfucker” blends funk, disco, and electro-pop into a dance bop and Dominic Fike’s “Aftermath” slows things down with his signature guitar tone and introspective storytelling.

Let’s get into it!

Jolly - Mani Saint

This chick is tough. She’s a Brazilian-Haitian living in Montreal. Super raw and experimental. This song is a mix of Electro-Afrobeat and Amapiano. The soundscape in this song takes you through a rollercoaster of energy with a beat breakdown that will make your whole body wiggle and jiggle. The lyrics are sang in both English and Creole which adds an extra depth to this jam. It’s better if you just listen to it rather than me trying to explain it.

Starfucker - Sherwyn

“Starfucker”, released back in 2020, is Sherwyn’s second solo single. Sherwyn, who is half of the producer duo Two Fresh, stepped into the spotlight with this track, demonstrating his individual artistry outside of the duo.

Musically, the song blends genres like funk, R&B, soul, electro-pop, and indie-pop. There’s definitely some 70s disco influences, pulsating synth melodies, bright warbling guitar, and fast-paced, skittering percussion, all topped off by Sherwyn’s distinctive, compelling vocals.

Aftermath - Dominic Fike

This one is definitely a standout track from Fike’s latest mixtape, Rocket, which dropped on Friday. I also really enjoyed the song, Pretender. It’s got that signature laid back flow and luscious guitar tone. The song explores the idea of someone laughing at the absurdity of the world while secretly feeling weighed down by personal pain. A theme consistent throughout his work.
